Ushering into existence in 1966, the Department of Chemistry, primarily offered only general degree course programs. The Honours course was introduced in 2003. Currently B.Sc Honours in Chemistry and B.Sc Program in Chemistry courses are offered under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. The department boosts of seven fulltime faculty members who are all well acclaimed for their teaching abilities by the students. The department has four laboratories, well equipped with state of the art instruments like FTIR Spectrophotometer (Perkin Elmer), UVVIS Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu), Rota Vapor with chiller (Buchi), Digital Balance (Meitler Toledo), Conductometric Bridge with cell Microwave Oven (Samsung), Refrigerator (Whirlpool), Magnetic Stirrer and many others. Seminar Library, ICT enabled classrooms and Research laboratory (for faculties) add up to the excellence of the infrastructure of the department.
Several students of the department have been well placed in different esteemed institutes after graduating from this institution. The department periodically organizes seminars, lecture series by eminent personalities for the benefit of the students.
