HISTORY .....and Beyond into the PRESENT..
The first ever journey of this department started in the year of 1961, with the opening of the evening session with only five teaching staff, primarily for imparting in commerce education to the employed or working students coming from the local industries, namely IISCO, ECL, Glass Factory, Reckitt and Colman Ltd. Senralaih etc. From its inception till now, The Department of Commerce has gained its reputation in terms of number of students, student s performances and achievements in employment etc.
This department catered to the needs of the then working people of this surrounding industrial belt, with a later extension of its benefits for one and all, both boys and girls. The faculties of this Department are enriched with knowledge and skill in the diverse subjects of commerce, dedicated towards the academic refinement of themselves and the student s development in the Commerce and allied subjects namely Economics, Law, Statistics, Taxation, Computer Education, and other soft skill techniques etc..
While earlier, only B.Com pass course had been introduced in the evening SHIFT as per the B.U. curriculum, in 1981 introduced morning shift of B.Com Pass course to accommodate the large number of students as well as to accommodate specifically for the girl students. Later on, in the academic session of 1983 1984, B.Com Hons. In Accounting was introduced as per the decision of the college authority and with affiliation of the B.U. with an intake of 30 Hons students only.
As with the social demand to accommodate more girl students in the honours course, new buildings came up and the time table was shifted from evening hours (3 pm 8 pm) to day hours (12 pm 5 pm) starting from the academic session 2012 2013. With the betterment of the reputation and performance of the students, the intake capacity of Hons. students had been increased time to time and from 2012-13 session it was raised to 120. .
On account of the heart felt dedication of the teachers of this department towards academic advancement of the students, this College gained reputation in consideration of students performances in examinations of the affiliating University, the then The University of Burdwan amongst all other colleges affiliated thereto. In the remote past, this College was often called the Leading College of faculties or department of commerce among the neighboring College or Institutions.
With the advancement of ebased and ICT teaching learning, this department started its Comprehensive Computer Laboratory in 2000. The department also has its own library to cater to the needs of the students and the faculty.
During the session of 2015 to 2016, the College as well the Department of Commerce, disaffiliated from B.U. and affiliated to K.N.U. and from the next academic session (2016 to 2017), CBCS was introduced as per the guidelines of K.N.U. For the benefit of the students, under the CBCS curricula, more and more stress on ICT oriented classroom teaching learning modules, supply of the soft copy of study materials, remedial tutorial classes beyond the normal routine hours particularly for the slow learners, providing references etc. to the poor students of the marginal section of the local society was given.
In the session of 2017 to 2018, under this department, another Hons course i.e. Hons. in Taxation has been introduced, with an intake capacity of 40 students, to meet the industrial demand of skilled and trained personnel. In future, the department is thinking about the industrial collaboration for the post learning commerce and management, taxation, accounting internship for the end semester students particularly for the newly introduced taxation stream.
Department recently is also thinking about the industrial visit at regular and convenient intervals simultaneously with the usual teaching learning and examinations, to local units. The faculty members try to enrich the beloved learners continuously with sincerity and tireless efforts, with the invited lectures or demonstration by the distinguished professionals in the related field of commerce, to supply the requirement of personnel with sufficient hands on experience not to waste nanosecond of time between the completion of the study and engagement into the work of the formers. The Department under the guidance of its affiliating university of KNU proposes to run the on the campus placement for the end semester students. The department as a part of CSR initiative towards clean and green academic atmosphere in the campus proposes to start campaning with the support of NSS wing. Considering the enhancement of faculty of expression in the English and other vernaculars of the learners of the beginning and mid-semester, department in future proposes to organize regular language workshop with other language departments of the college.
The demand for the degree of B.Com rises in this globalised market oriented skill demanding socio economic working environment day by day. To meet the challenging situation before us in the context of the aforesaid situation, our department commits to dedicate to the running of the departmental administration on Total Involvement Basis (TIB), with the real time basis active participation of one and all so that our department may rise to the apex step of the ladder in terms of academic achievement and refinement and post learning performances of the students.
