Echoing the rhythm from the poem, FRIENDS by the legendary Rabindranath Tagore, the Department of Bengali in Bidhan Chandra College, thrives to light up before the students the path of success and accomplishment. Treading since the inception of the college in 1961 the department has continued to teach both Honours and Program courses in the undergraduate levels with success and satisfaction to all concerned. Currently the department follows the CBCS system of education under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University.
The college is located close to the state border and have students primarily from the under-privileged and deprived sections of the society. The department thriving in this multi-lingual and multicultural society has successfully established its fame in imparting quality teaching with six faculty members. The vision of the department is to move towards excellence in higher education to achieve a just plural and equitable society in consonance with the constitutional values. The thrust areas of the department lie in promoting interest and enthusiasm in Bengali language and literature amongst the students for improving their literary and communicative skills. As an effort for promoting all-round development of the students, the department actively encourages in participation and organization of seminars both intra and inter departmental, cultural activities, inter college quiz and debate competitions, annual exhibitions, educational tours, wall magazines and many other cocurricular activities. The department also inspires its students to enthusiastically participate in social activities associated with the NSS and NCC branches in the college.
The mission of the Department is to give importance to the socially and economically,marginalized students to preserve and enrich sociocultural traditions of Asansol, Barakar and Raniganj coalfield area and prepare students such that after leaving college on completion of the three year degree course,he is equipped with a positive frame of mind,a vibrant idea of Bengali language and literature, a logical mind setup and most prominently a balanced personality.
